Rode the Red Mountain chair to the summit and traversed toward the Record Mountain ridge immediately behind Red Mountain.
Snowpack Observations
A snowpit was excavated to a depth of 1 m on a NW aspect at 1980 m (6484 ft) on a 20° slope.
Total snow depth: 160 cm
Ambient temperature: 0 °C
Surface: Hard faceted crust
Layering:
10 cm down: 1 cm thick hard crust over rounded grains (~3 mm)
70 cm down: 3 cm layer of rounded grains (~5 mm)
Stability Tests:
Extended Column Test (90 cm):
Failure at 15 cm down on ECTN27 (shoulder)
Failure was resistant and non-propagating
Hand Hardness:
Surface crust to 30 cm: 4F
Below 30 cm: 1F
Ski Conditions
Skied through tight trees down to the Red ski run. Snow in the trees was very crusty, with icy conditions directly below trees. Red Mountain ski runs were mostly ice, with rocks exposed in many areas.
No new recent signs of avalanches were seen.
