Quick Observation
We went up the Ille Glacier, aiming to ski off Youngs Peak. Sadly, we got whited out as soon as we gained the toe of the glacier and decided to turn around halfway across the Ille Neve at 2500m. 1200m-1900m: Breakable melt-freeze crust ranging from 4-5mm at valley bottom to 20-30mm at 1600m. It tapers off from 1600-1900m. Most difficult to ski below 1700m. 1900m-2500m: The melt-freeze crust becomes a rime/zipper crust due to hanging fog at glacier elevation. It's grabby but skiable. Dry settled snow underneath. The 1900-2100m elevation band offered the best spring conditions as the zipper crust melted away due to rising temps. Daytime warming in the PM allowed for an easier than anticipated descent with the MFcr softening. Valley bottom travel is challenging, borderline unsafe in sections. Extremely fast travel combined with rock-hard bumps, large tree bombs and a grabby crust makes for some pretty tricky skiing. Take your time navigating the lower slopes. Obvious signs of the recent storm avalanche cycle to size 3. No reactivity to skier traffic when cutting steep unsupported features in ALP/TL. No signs of wind slabs where we travelled. Glued on settled snow.
