Quick Observation

On our way to Thunder Meadows cabin for 3 days. Ski patrol granted us access to Polaris from FAR. We knew we would be dealing with a chance of small avalanches - failing on a January surface hoar layer. Four turns in I saw a shooting crack go downhill from me and when it hit a sweet spot it broke 65-50cms deep and 20-30 metres wide. We were expecting it, but after 45 minutes of discussing and weighing our options, this small avalanche was still enough for us to turn around. We had a lot of terrain to cover and if we set one off this early in the trip there was a good chance we would set off many more in the days to come. Potentially proving to be more destructive than this one.
