Quick Observation
It was a bluebird day, perfect for exploring, with a focus on mellow terrain while SPAW is in effect for the BNF forecasting region. The lack of wind on Sunday resulted in hot weather, reaching temperatures of -2°C, combined with intense solar radiation. Exposed snow on the northern approach to Twin Cairns was severely affected by both wind and sun, resulting in minimal penetration while skiing. Depending on solar exposure, skis would break through and wallow in the facets beneath, often catching edges. Multiple avalanches and sloughing were observed on steep, alpine, east-facing cross-loaded slopes and gullies. Mellow terrain and spring-like conditions make for great laps on short pitches, but it’s crucial to stay on lower-angled slopes and avoid overhead hazards, as Twin Cairns contains many convex slopes at higher elevations.
