While ascending trees at approximately 1900 m of a N treed aspect of Hero’s knob, one skier remote triggered the slope about 150 m above us. One skier was caught and carried 15 m. We were below tree line and the avalanche occurred at tree line. We were very surprised at how far above us this triggered from.
We expect we collapsed the deep persistent layer from below which was primed from the weight of the new storm snow. See photo for crown of avalanche.
Snowfall in the area was much heavier than expected overnight, with approximately 20cm new snow by 10am and S1-S2 throughout the day.
There was consistent natural avalanche activity from 12:00 PM onwards from up valley.
