Weather: Obscured visibility, ~35 degrees, light to moderate rain all day to at least 7500' and above, light winds Tour area: 6900' to 7300' above Lick Creek Yurt Snowpack: wet, heavy "mashed potato" skiing. Snowpit: 7250', E aspect, 12 degree slope. average HS = 150cm Snowpit Layers: 135cm: upper 2 cm was wet snow grains (4F), 133~110cm mostly 1F hardness (settled, mod-hard slab), 110-80cm P hardness 80-35cm = 1F 35-0cm = 4F old facet layer (healing) ~60cm = old weak layer, moist facet grains ~ 35cm - 12/1 Rain Crust obvious, water pooling on crust, facets above and below were moist to wet ** Notable subtle rain runnels on snow surface and snowpit revealed that water was seeping significantly deep into snowpack, and saturating most of the current buried weak layers. Test Result: CTN; Was able to pull 110~30cm (above deepest weak layer -12/1 Rain Crust- off as a single hard slab.
Avalanche
Wet Loose, natural trigger within 24hr prior period. North Aspect, D1, on ~45 degree slope, from steep rocks. Ran ~30m into more shallow terrain.
