Quick report
Skied the North ridge of Freel today, coming from Luther Pass, and heading out to High Meadows. Temperatures were warm, but the refreeze was surprisingly strong on all aspects and at all elevations, with supportable travel on the entire ascent. The only notable exceptions to this was in thickly treed areas. True north and NW slopes were still somewhat firm at 1:00 pm, and hadn’t gone through the full transformation that other aspects had. S and SE slopes had an inch or so of large grained corn snow on a supportable base at 11:15 am. Surfaces on these solar slopes were also much smoother than on the northerly half of the compass. Skiing the north ridge was still quite enjoyable, and the descent out to High Meados was reasonable, although coverage rapidly decreased below 7500’. Exposed southerly slopes were bare all the way up to 10,800’.
