Quick report
Spent the last 2 days skiing in and around the Victor creek area. Quite the mixed bag of conditions… “A ski run is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get” Hard wind slab, softer settled dry snow, hot powder, sun crusts, wind crusts, even a little corn in true solar aspects. All sometimes in the same run. Hiking in a t-shirt and ambient air temperature of 46 degrees at 8000’ in the shade had me thinking it was late March or April and not early February. But alas, making lemons from lemonade and enjoying the beautiful sunshine has been the name of the game. West facing terrain has seen the most wind, east aspects continue to provide the most consistent turns, north is highly variable, and south at elevation has yet to fully transition to corn with the low sun angle associated with early February. It’s been hard to even find an avalanche the past few weeks, skiing steep slopes has had minimal sluffing, any wind slabs have been stubborn, my main concern was “slide for life” hard snow surfaces and wet loose in lower elevation slopes. Otherwise it has been nice to travel Han Solo and not worry too much. I’d gladly trade the freedom of movement for a much needed refresh and heightened avalanche conditions. Do your snow dances! (Again🤦♂️) Thanks to BCA (backcountry access) for replacing our broken beacon park command unit. It is fixed and up and running at the motorized beacon training park at Francis Wallace! Just in time for the McCall fun run this Saturday. And thanks to the groomer for keeping the road is great shape despite the warmth! Go valley county groomers!🙏
