Quick report
- Cracking
- isolated
Lots of new snow fell today and the high winds around Herman saddle created noticeable transport. Depths varied but we estimated ~9 inches of new snow on a supportable heavier snow layer. Besides the avalanche area (where we observed some isolated cracking) and very unsupported roll overs we found mostly stable conditions in and near the tree-line.
Avalanche
While skiing a chute on the south side of Mazama bowl we triggered a D1 soft slab avalanche (S, 5600ft). The crown was ~6 inches deep. No one was caught or carried. It failed on a wind hardened crust that was slicker than the old-new interface in other areas. It propagated ~35ft and ran ~75ft.
