Dust on corn is rare, but it was a welcome surprise this morning on Red Lake Peak. Less than a cm of new snow was present in the Red Lake Peak area and even the most wind loaded spots held barely a full cm of new snow. Still, the new snow partially smoothed out the snow surface and somewhat oddly didn't create the more common dust-on-crust scenario. Winds were calm on the SE climb and on the summit ridge a colder N wind ranged from calm to light in strength. On my descent, the snow remained consistent, with just a small amount of soft melted snow, until below 8200', where the surface snow was more melted and less supportive. From the top looking west and north, I couldn't see any evidence of recent avy activity in the Meiss area. On the descent, I could see a slide on the main bowl of Elephant's Back.
