Toured to the start of the Chair Peak N Slope line to check out the area. At elevations below ~5,300’ on all aspects we experienced heavy, highly saturated snow with a crusty, breakable sleet layer on top. This snow was well bonded to the crust layer below. Above 5’300’ on all aspects we started to observe lighter, less-saturated snow that would produce isolated cracks while skinning and sheave off a few smaller storm slabs on top of the crust layer about ~6-7” beneath. We assessed the risk of a consequential avalanche as fairly low but with very low visibility and a mix of rain and snow coming down we decided to make a conservative decision and ski back the way we came. No natural avalanches or other warning signs observed. A pretty typical storm day at the Pass.
