Patchy snow past Kulshan Creek. Abrupt consistent snowpack at old Kulshan cabin site (4800ft). Trace amounts of new snow here gradually depending to 40cm near ridge line at 7200ft. Snow was cold and dry, felt generally well bonded. Full sun, fewer clouds than expected, and NE slopes even at 7000ft that get full morning sun were beginning to moisten and slab around 8:30am. Mostly avoided avy terrain but did pop a few very small D0.5 slabs on steeper rolls. Most snow on the N half of the compass stayed cold and dry until I departed around 10am. Warming quickly through the morning but clouds began to roll in around 11am. If a sun or rain crust develops over this soft snow travel may be challenging until it gets isothermic. The large avalanche on Lincoln peak N face kept me heads up and was a good reminder that the recent fresh snow arrived in significant quantities and can move if provoked. Avalanche
One large D3 avalanche on the N face of Lincoln Peak. It looks like it only involved recent snow but had a pronounced crown and travelled hundreds of feet on steep unsupported terrain.
