Quick report
Sat - Sun we climbed Jack mountain via nohokomeen headwall route (bike from Ross dam TH to east bank TH, hike to may creek camp, bushwhack/skin up to glacier, then climb the headwall to summit) Travel conditions: hwy 20 and east bank trail was bare (just a little frost and dusting of snow). Did the bushwhack (steep W aspect) in trail runners until 3900’, then boots/crampons til 4500’, then skin rest of the way. The 4500-5000 band had lots of blowdowns to dodge and the glacier was wind board and ski crampons were helpful. Headwall (very steep N) was snice and great for booting. At the top ridge we went on some steep S aspects which was weak crust and we sunk down to knees/hips in soft snow underneath Snow stability: no signs of recent or old avalanches anywhere on shaded aspects. Wind was blowing some snow around on sat and sun; we found isolated pockets of unreactive 3” windslab on the glacier. We saw what looked like a recent D2 wet loose avalanche off the south face- I’m not sure if it was recent tho since it was cold Sat and sun was still crusty at 1045am sun when we were there. Surface hoar in sheltered locations lower down Ski conditions: we skied from the base of the headwall. Glacier was windboard and firm, not great for skiing but still fun. Lower down there was some peudocorn on the W aspects getting sun and some sheltered powder lower down. Forest looked/skied like spring; my new skins got pine needles on them
