Haines Summit obs

We are spending a few days in the Haines Summit leading up to a busy Easter weekend. 30cm of heavy storm snow fell warm below 750m in the Rainy Hollow and below treeline areas on the southern end of the road. This tapered quickly up in the Summit to 10cm or less. The temperature was +2 at 800m and the snow was wet. Expect a crust in this area if things cool down again. A ridge of high pressure came in with strong SW winds and nuked the place for the afternoon. We observed numerous natural wind slab avalanches to size 2 during this event. The wind was tapering but still blowing when we left. Expect south and west facing areas to be wind affected while sheltered north bowls and gullies should still be fine. Wind slabs and storm slabs will likely remain sensitive for a little while as the weather improves for the weekend. The Highways operators were busy clearing parking lots and pullouts and a few campers were starting to pull in.
