Toured towards Hatch Peak, $1,000 run on a usual approach. Turned around at 3,800ft on a low ridge in front of Hatch. Dug a pit and skied out to the car. Temp: -13deg Wind:calm Sky: hazy at 11:00am, becoming clear in the afternoon. Aspect: NE ~30* Snow depth 75cm CT5 ECTN12 Reactive layer from soft wind slab on the surface then another fracture 35cm deep. Snow was 4F to Fist hard in the entire column sitting on a Knife hard crust. 2-5cm thick soft slab over ~2ft unconsolidated snow with several shooting cracks and whumpfs throughout the day; most consistent on NE aspects where the slab was stiffer. One shooting crack was >5ft long Crowns visible on NNE aspects of powder pimple. We assumed ridge on Hatch would have more wind loading over soft snow and decided to turn around.
