We had heard that the snowpack consisted of melt freeze crust through out and we just couldn't contain ourselves in trying our luck. That said, what a mess! 3-4" soft snow on a layers of unsupported crusts sitting on weak snow. Crust layers were 3 to 6 inches thick and were like skiing on bricks on the way out. Only one word could adequately describe it... TERRIBLE! We started at Goldmint and headed up the trail about a mile before crossing the river. Made our way up through the Alders to just below top of treeline. Everyone in our group had serious reservations as to whether continuing on was a good idea do to snow quality. We discussed and decided to turn around and hope for more snow. No formal tests were done.
