Quick report

A weak and shallow snowpack exists around Emma Lake. Cold slopes held a mostly faceted snowpack that may become a future weak layer.

NE winds were not observed to be transporting snow, likely because surfaces had already been exposed to more recent wind than snowfall. Across short distances, we experienced a range of conditions from loose and shallow facets to firm wind board that required kicking steps.

We chose to travel by foot. Although we saw several options for ski/snowboard descents, they almost certainly would result in damaged equipment and possibly season-ending injuries.

Old, small avalanches on Mt Emma were observed
