Toured into the north Gallatin on Wednesday. The approach trail was still thin and sharky. In some east to se facing trees between 8700’ and 9400’, the snowpack was mostly new snow with patches of older, weak snow underneath. Above 9400’, the snowpack got substantially deeper, with a firm crust layer underneath the new snow, and facets beneath the crust. As I neared an e to se ridge, I experience collapses of various sizes, including one that was loud enough to make me jump. The collapses all occurred in windloaded areas. The whumphs increased in size as I moved into more east facing and shady terrain. Near the end of my tour, I noted blowing snow coming off of the high peaks and ridge lines.
