See photos for an idea of some of the natural avalanche activity in the Portage Valley over the past week. It is impressive.
From reporting Party: It was today (Tuesday 4/28) at about 6pm. I had hiked down the foot trail of Byron glacier trail and was at the clearing by the creek about to take off my bag and put on my skis to climb the glacier when I heard a massive breaking noise. It was so loud and distinct, it was impossible to confuse what it was. It was coming from right over the top of the glacier wall. I started running as fast as I could, and as I ran, I heard 'whooshes' coming from the top of the mountain on either side of me as I ran out. In total I heard 5 'whooshes', but did not see any snow. They were incredibly loud, and I believed they were coming from very close to the peak of the mountain. Forecaster note: This video is from May, 2025 (Byron Glacier Trail) and serves a good reminder of just how exposed this trail is to avalanches. Particularly in the springtime as the winter snowpack high above the valley transitions into a more spring and summer snowpack. Travel on the Byron Glacier Trail is strongly discouraged when there is any overhead snow hazard.
