Definitely more touchy today than we were expecting. Lower angle terrain was fine, but if it was steep, it was sliding. Mostly loose dry and a few soft slabs. Average crown heights of the slabs were 5-8” and ran 30-50 feet. Some ran longer if they had room to run. You could get knocked off your feet or pushed into some obstacles if you were paying attention. This was all relatively easy to manage. My big concern for the day was all the skiers/riders without avy gear. Maybe 10% of people in the canyon had a pack on. I know this happens often, but with all the activity we saw today, I would certainly want to wear a beacon and ski with a partner who is prepared. So if you’re headed out of bounds this weekend, be cautious of riders below you who might not be prepared. That being said, it’s great to have winter back.
