Skinning to ski glades near Black Mtn of Maine, we opted to ski an untracked glade that faces SE. Noticed no instability issues while skiing, but when transitioning in a flat area with 2+ feet of snow, noticed widespread cracking and collapsing in the snow. While skinning along flats in deep snow, saw signs of cracking shooting 15 feet ahead and would have noticeable collapses underfoot. It seemed shooting cracks would propagate outwards and fail at any undergrowth that was poking through the snow. Dug a quick hand pit to satisfy my curiosity, seemed to be a cohesionless storm slab on top of a weak layer too deep to easily identify. New snow was fist to 4-finger and did not seem to have any cohesion when applying pressure from the back of the column.
