Snowpack

During our field visit to Huntington Ravine we observed a generally thin and disconnected snowpack across most areas. The snowpack in the majority of the terrain lacks sufficient depth and continuity to act as a bed surface for large avalanches.

Notable Exceptions:

  • Top of South Gully: Smooth, planar snow surfaces were observed, capable of supporting avalanche activity.
  • Top of Odell’s Gully: Similar smooth, but smaller planar snow surfaces were identified.
  • Top of Pinnacle Gully: Not observed, but likely to host a similar smooth snow surface above the ice before the Alpine Garden.
  • Central Gully: A thin ribbon of connected snow was observed, widening at the base above the fan.  

While these areas may support small avalanches relative to the size of their paths, any avalanche in these locations would be highly consequential to a human due to the steep terrain and exposure to hazards below.

We were unable to directly assess snow stability in the identified locations. Observations were limited to visual assessments from a distance.
