Quick report

Our AIARE 1 class headed up to the GoS snowfields to check out conditions, assess the snowpack, and decide if we wanted to ski based on findings (and time). We observed active wind loading at ridge-tops (Red Flag) and newly formed wind slabs in the start zones of the gullies. We dug a snow pit at 4100', E aspect, in the scrub below the snowfields.  A compression test gave us a clean shear (CTM Q1, down 32 cm) at the new snow/old snow interface. Due to the active loading, fresh wind slabs and extreme cold, we decided to ride the GOS trail back to the car and return on a warmer day.
