Quick report
While doing some practice quick pits, we found a weak faceted layer that was 20-40cm down, depending on the location. This layer was stubborn to fracture into a resistant planar break, and did not propagate in the ETC test. Besides that, the snowpack was mostly right side up, with 6 inches of nice powder over a firm base. The south-facing slopes had some sun rollers and a few loose wet point releases.
Avalanche
We were 3 miles up the Castner doing a crevasse clinic and some practice pit work. We saw lots of old wind slab avalanches on the north-facing gullies above the glacier. We also saw one large (D2) storm slab avalanche, likely from a mid-week storm that deposited about 6 inches of fresh snow in the area.
