Heavy Snowfall, Cracking

Picture below taken on sheltered west aspect at 7700'. New snow approximately 45 cm and generally right side up. Hand shear, shovel tilt test, and CT did not suggest any instabilities or slab in the new snow or at the new snow/old snow interface.

Poked out onto a small, steeper test slope. South aspect 8400'. Got a shooting crack that failed within the new snow (see pictures below). Failure occurred 30 cm down from surface.

Profile appeared similar to above photo (F>4F). Slope may be more prone to wind loading which may have led to the increase in instability.
