Red Flags
Heavy Snowfall, Wind Loading

This observation was taken during an AAI Rec 2 course. Our group ascended the W/SW side of the Short Swing area from Mill D (map location is from this first pit). Our pit was dug at 10:30am on a SW slope, elevation was 8500ft, slope angle was 20 degrees. Snowfall and wind were light at this time. Pit results: CTN13 and ECTN18 both 30cm down from snow surface.

At around 11am we continued our ascent to the top of the cone moving through SW/S/SE terrain. We experienced strong S/SW wind and heavy snow during our ascent.

We descended into Powder Park and dug 3 more snow pits (see other observations) at 1:30pm on a SW slope at 8500ft, slope angle was ~14 degrees. Most notably, each of the 3 snow pits in my group indicated a a CTN4 on the new soft snow about 25cm down.
