Quick report

We dug a pit right below a small roller on Manitoba. The slope at the pit was ~25°. The spot was wind loaded. Our goal was to see how well bonded the windslab was to the layer below. We found a clear buried ~0.5-cm-thick surface hoar about ~30 cm below the surface. This layer was weak and failed after 3 taps from the shoulder during a column test. A skier doing a small jump above the pit also resulted in failure along this layer. We mostly stuck to slopes mostly <25°, with one small pitch 25°<30°, and did not experience any signs of instability while skiing. Snow was mostly windpacked and stiff. Very heavy and wet snow conditions below 2200 ft.
