Summer Trail

Overall snow conditions were very firm in southeast aspects in Tuckerman Ravine. Traveling through the Broccoli Trees was fully supportable on foot with no postholing. 

A hasty pit looker’s right of Right Gully had a total height of snow was 224 cm about 4700 ft. Found a breakable crust on top of a thicker knife hard melt-freeze crust and P wind slabs. No obvious weak layer stood out or need for formal testing. Looked at hardness changes and near crusts for facets but did not find any. While there had been cold temperatures, southern aspects saw significant solar warming on the 27th and warm temperatures on the 28th. This likely functioned to melt and round some of the facets that might have been developing near the various crusts. 

Found soft snow near the floor of the Ravine sheltered below rocks in the trees. This was very isolated and most of the observed terrain was scoured to a melt-freeze crust. A hand shear yielded stubborn results and failed on a hardness change of P over 4F. The strong over weak composition was about 5 inches in depth.

On the Lion Head Summer Trail found a small crown line with debris underneath that ran across the trail path. This was small in size and the frozen debris measured 4-7 inches in depth. While the time of this was unknown, the crown line was found to be frozen and observed frozen roller balls, small point releases, and wet loose debris around the Summer Trail and think that this likely happened either the 27th or 28th when southern aspects saw solar effect and warm temperatures.
