A mixed bag

Steve 'Reidles' Reid, Wednesday 23rd October, 2024 9:32PM

A day of expected weather - moderate (gusting strong) SW winds, fairly warm, light AM snow, skies somewhere between broken and overcast. Weather appeared to be deteriorating as we left the field. After a while out of the alpine we set out with the goal to look at conditions on a wide range of aspects. S facing suncrust is very evident, and snow on E faces felt windpressed and of inconsistent density, both of which made for challenging skiing but good travel. N and W faces we travelled less, but seemed to hold more consistent snow. Wind transport was evident all day at all elevations, so I suspect finding sheltered terrain will yield the best turns tomorrow. Despite a tremendous amount of 'stability testing' by snowmobile traffic, no signs of avalanche activity, or instability. Even on steep features the most recent snow appeared well bonded to the underlying surface. HS in area travelled mostly averaged 2m.
