FHR Traverse

gwilson031, Saturday 21st January, 2023 10:50PM

Did the French-Haig-Robertson traverse today. Conditions were mostly as expected on the approach to the French glacier and up to the French col. Light powder was present on the Haig glacier, and the boot pack up to the Robertson col was soft and challenging. We started a bootpack traversing across the slope but realized it was too thin in many spots, so we ended up booting straight up to the col in a slightly wind-loaded pocket. The wind slab felt old and had a few layers of crust on top of it. From my reading this is not the typical boot pack route, but it is what worked for us in the conditions today. Skiing down Robertson was hard pack with lots of wind affect and breakable wind skin/crust. We skied on skier’s left to avoid crevasses in the middle of the basin near the top, and on skier’s right above the choke. General stability on the route was okay especially in all the wind board type areas, however use caution on the boot pack, we definitely found that to be the crux of the day.
