Tryst Lake Chutes

m.tomsmith, Friday 23rd December, 2022 4:50PM

I clicked "deep powder" but what I really meant was "deep facets." Went up to the chutes at Tryst Lake, the main skin track up the ridge follows a route that you'd probably want if you're looking to lose the cops. There is also a skin track in the gulley but we opted out from the avvy exposure and stuck to the goat path. In all seriousness the ridge route is OK but followed a better path in previous years. For the chutes, the snowpack is still pretty brutal. The chute in the picture has was less snow than previous years (as they all do) and is a totally different beast. There was about 5-10cm of semi consolidated powder sitting on top of about 50cm of facets- no joke. Skiied like powder but the whole thing just wanted to slide as dry loose constantly in the steep sections. Foot pen was about leg deep on the transitions. First turns on the 1st chute from skiiers right caused a size 1 dry loose that ran most of the way down and really improved the ski conditions by making the pack a bit more supportive. Bottom line is the chutes are skiiable but be very cautious about the sluff that you produce and the serious layer of facets- wind slab forming soon would be scary on top of that. Ski out was a blast down the gully.
