Quick Observation

Today we practiced patience out on Morrisey Ridge by going for a nice walk in the sun with some light wind. We found the Jan surface hoar buried 75 cm deep on a north aspect at treeline around 2000m. It failed as a sudden planer in a compression test but didn't propagate in an extended column test. We avoided steep openings in the trees like the plague! The late February facet layer was less developed in this area than we have seen in the South Rockies forecast area. We measured the air temp as -0.7° at 2000m but the sun was coming in STRONG! Didn't see any new wet loose avalanches but they could be happening right now with the continued sun.
