Today we went to the Onion to see if we could get above the rain line..... sadly we couldn't. We found wet surface snow up to 1800m, and suspect that the freezing level was as high as 2500m at times today. We didn't see any avalanches, but we actively avoided travelling in avalanche terrain. We stuck to simple, low angle terrain far away from overhead hazard from any avalanche paths. Rain adds weight and heat to the snowpack, significantly increasing the load on any weak layers, and making avalanches easier to trigger. This makes our decision making easy when it's raining - we don't go into avalanche terrain!
