We had a great day out at Hankin! Coverage on the cut runs is quite good for mid-December, dare I say better than they were all last season.
We worked up the shoulder of the bowl above the cabin into some high treeline/low alpine slopes. We did not hear any whumpfing. We experience minor cracking on ridge crest rolls that had had some previous wind exposure. Light wind effect did not impact riding quality. Winds were calm while we were out between 11 am - 2:30 pm. Temperatures stayed below freezing all day. Highest we saw on the truck was -2C.
With this new vantage point on the ridge we observed a few previous avalanches in the bowl. The most recent looked like a size 2 that likely came out while it was snowing yesterday. There was a light dusting of snow over the debris. Debris did not look particularly deep, so we suspect it just involved recent storm snow.
Other debris was older, covered in a decent amount of snow, and harder to size. It would appear that things have been cycling over the last week or so.
We triggered a few size 1 slabs in small features while skiing down. They had limited propagation, were ~15cm deep and ran with a bit of gusto. These pulled out of a steep wind exposed rib and only involved the most recent snow from last night.
It was fun to step out into some treeline/alpine terrain, but felt good to stick to small features today.
