Stormy Mount Fernie

Lizard Range and Flathead , Saturday 2nd January, 2021 3:55PM

Went for a walk up Mount Fernie and skied supported terrain around TL. Freezing level ~1450m. Lots of wind transport @ TL with stiffer slabs forming on NE aspects. Had a few cracks in steeper convex rolles and wind loaded pockets but no avalanching. Poor visibility into Alpine.

Snow conditions were: Crusty, Wet, Wind affected, Powder. Weather conditions were: Stormy, Windy, Warm, Cloudy. We rode: Mellow slopes, Open trees. We avoided: Alpine slopes, Steep slopes, Convex slopes. Riding quality was good.

Avalache Conditions: Rapid temperature rise to near zero degrees or wet surface snow. 30cm + of new snow, or significant drifitng, or rain in the last 48 hours. Slab avalanches today or yesterday. Whumpfing or drum-like sounds or shooting cracks.

Some recent small (up to size 1.5) slab avalanches out of the Batman Chutes area. Also observed a size 1 Loose Wet onto Fairy Cr trail, suspected tree bomb trigger.
