It was a beautiful day to be out. Valley inversions were present and temperatures felt warm at mid and upper elevations. West winds started picking up during the later afternoon hrs.
Snowpack
Early season conditions currently exist across the zone. Above Timberline we observed a HS of 40-50 cm from last week. This made for thin, sharky travel below Silcox hut. Once above 6500 ft, we were able to connect ribbons of drifted snow that made for better travel and riding conditions.
Today warmed up at mid and upper elevations. Below 7500 ft snow surfaces started getting moist (these slopes will be crusty tomorrow!). Above this, we found a chalky, supportable cold snow.
Overall, it's a mixed bag of early-season conditions out there. Above 7000ft, wind-loaded leeward slopes are starting to come into play and becoming more connected with time. These are the specific areas where you may find an avalanche problem and likely plenty of rocks to get raked through. Outside of these areas, there just isn't enough snow for avalanches yet. Just plenty of rocks to hit your skis/split on. Exercise early-season caution out there!
