Quick report

Shaded north-facing terrain out Warm Springs and in out of bounds terrain near Baldy harbors a weak, sugary snowpack that will not hold up well to rapid loading.

No obvious signs of instability.

Overcast start to the day. Snow began in Warm Springs at about 11 AM. Gusty wind from the SW.

Snowpack

Middle elevation terrain above Warm Springs Rd in the Baldy OB held 75-85 cm of very weak faceted snow. Once off previously wind-loaded ridgelines the snowpack had very little structure (easy to push a pole through, boot pen to ground). There was a thin interval of somewhat stronger snow at the base of the slab above the 12/13 weak layer.

Start zones and tracks above Warm Springs hold enough snow cover to get any natural slides to the road, especially as you reach Frenchmans Bend. W and SW winds could preferentially load these start zones above the road.

Avalanche

No avalanches observed.
