Steep, sun-affected slopes were on our radar as we planned our trip today as the snowmobile route into Mear lake travels below a few large south-facing avalanche paths. Throughout the day we watched for avalanche activity on south-facing slopes and kept our eye on daytime temperatures which remained well below freezing. We observed cold northerly winds that were also keeping the surface snow cold. This gave us time to spend hiking up and then skiing a sweet powder line sheltered from wind slabs. As we were leaving, we did observe a few loose wet avalanches on steep slopes impacted by the sun.
