Is there snow left to blow?! That is what wanted we wanted to find out today when we visited the west slope of the divide in Corbin. Big windward slopes were scoured to rock after last week’s storm, so today’s westerly winds had only minimal snow on the move. Small windslabs in the alpine and steering clear of cornices were our main concerns. The main riding areas are pretty tracked out and wind affected, it is likely a good time to do a bit of exploring if you want fresh. The grooming in Corbin was great..but trails into any of the bowls are hella whooped!
-8.0 in alpine. Moderate west wind.
Rain crust from the January 12 storm up to 1800m. We found 165 cm of snow in sheltered areas at treeline, but on more open slopes depth varies according to orientation to wind. For example, west facing terrain in the alpine is scoured to rock. The mid pack is well settled, and the December crust was down 120 cm and well bonded to surrounding snow in our pit.
