Quick Observation

Out for a day ski at Jumbo Pass. We remote triggered a size 1 from 50-100m away on a protected slope near the Pass proper. E aspect at 2250m elevation started near some unsupported rocks and ran 125m, 25m wide, 35cms deep. I decided to ski cut a roll on the adjacent slope producing another size 1 which joined up the crown from the first slide. Compression tests showed this layer to fail at CTE 5 with a sudden planar shear. A test pit lower at 2100m, similar aspect, similar slope angle but in denser trees showed a CTE 7 resistant planar shear, small rolls not reactive to ski cutting. No other avalanches observed. All in all a good day out but we stayed in conservative terrain and were suspect of any convex features and open slopes.
