Quick report
Had a nice morning with surprisingly cold temps and easy uphill travel. Did not experience any rain in the morning, consistent snow through the morning and afternoon. Flakes were large. In protected areas the old snow was stiff, and once out of the trees the old snow softened quite a bit. My skis were well supported but I experienced boot penetration at 5600’ with the old snow surface. At 11:00 there was not enough wind to move the trees at ridge line, and the falling snow seemed to be minimally affected by wind. Was surprised at how much snow pack has been lost on solar aspects and equally surprised at the good coverage in protected aspects.
Avalanche
Observed old wet slab debris on steep slopes below the bear gap ridge line.
