Quick report

Bluebird w light winds except mid-morn. Another large travel hazard pit (“blowhole” per Patrol) just off trail 7K’. Dropped into skiers left gully of Zigzag Canyon 7.3K’, but quickly aborted (crusty snow quality) by traversing high left to 6750’ lip (which reminded me of track I saw prior day that only escaped further down Canyon). Due to heavy/crusty snow quality on 200 Turns also bailed on that, both low angle and lower bowl after east facing cornice drop hinted at terrible skiing. After final snow quality bail (west-facing side of Dogleg), decided to follow odd side-step tracks given prior day’s ZZC escape obs. Trax eventually led to (and into) Little ZZ Canyon around 6K’. Since only cornice fall in gully, similar elevation/aspect to my cornice cut and short on time to catch infrequent bus, found easier spot to follow. Didn’t realize I had triggered small loose wet til it tried to catch me on my turn back up canyon (forgot that characteristic…and human factor lessons).

Avalanche

Cornice fall crossing ski tracks in Salmon Gully. Observed untriggered east-facing cornice fall into WRG (7500ish). Later observed old loose wet debris around 7100’ WRG (book entrance level). Many more D1-2ish east-facing (some west too) wet loose under rocky/meltout terrain in Big Zigzag Canyon. Dropped bit of cornice onto east facing entrance to lower 200 Turns bowl entrance (6Kish) wo incident beyond roller (and cruddy looking skiing). Lots of loose wet instability (rollerballs) under east facing Little Zigzag Canyon, but no avys (til I triggered D0.5 loose wet mid-afternoon w drop off lip also around 6K’). See pics.
