Snow surfaces did refreeze last night despite air temperatures well above freezing. The refreeze was superficial near treeline, producing an icy crust that was easy to kick through with a boot, and increasingly a more solid and deep freeze with elevation. At 8,500’ on southerly aspects, last week’s wind affected storm snow was capped by a robust melt/freeze crust that’s supportable under a boot but possible to kick steps into. Areas scoured to older snow also exist and were frozen solid, not possible to kick steps into. At 9:00 AM, slopes facing the morning sun were starting to soften below about 7,000’ elevation.
