Quick report
Cold morning at Steven's Pass with great snow conditions and observed stability. Noticed a very distinct (forecasted) inversion later in the day with a warmer layer around 5,000ft elevation. Noticed some rollerballs later in the day at higher elevations on S aspects. Dug a quick pit at approximately 5,100ft on a SE-facing 30° slope. Measured a snow depth of 260cm, with the top cohesive layer approx 25cm deep. Found a very firm icy layer at 160cm deep. Everything appeared to be holding together well after some strategic ski cutting, pole whacking, and stomping on various 30°+ slopes. Found some instances of wind textured snow, which was more firm and less desirable to ski on. Overall an excellent day in bounds and out of bounds at Steven's Pass! Early season conditions exist, and practice patience with the latest travel conditions. Pilot car shuttling starts at the East Portal tunnel and involved a 15min wait at 7am this morning.
