Quick report
We went to Rubicon Peak to asses the persistent weak layer. We encountered predictably variable conditions. The trailhead is 80/20 snow/dirt. Recent rains have reduced snow coverage and left a crust at elevations below ~8,200'. The crust disappears around 8,200' and conditions improve dramatically with snow depths reaching 30+ inches near the peak. We dug a pit near 8,950' and were able to produce multiple test results indicating that the PWL is still present and reactive. The depth hoar and facets are increasing in moisture but still problematic in this area. Above 8,500' the snow quality and coverage is good. Despite the low December sun angles there was evidence of our recent warm temperatures with melt / freeze icicles on any trees catching sunlight, even on fairly sheltered N facing terrain. No obvious signs of instability.
