Quick report

There was about 5" of settled new snow in open sheltered areas from the last storm that occurred on Friday. Snow depths were wildly variable due to elevation and tree cover as we climbed through the forest. In places we were travelling on just a few inches of snow and by the time we popped out into a meadow at 1,600' there was almost 6' of snow (175cm). There was 1' of snow above the very firm and thick crust from the storm at the beginning of February. There were a few centimeters of facets growing above the crust with some old and new snow on top. We got a stable result in our test (ECTN10) on a hardness change within the new snow. We climbed above treeline where the surface varied from patches of ice to thick very firm wind slab. We dug a second pit at 1,800' and got an unstable result (ECTP12 - 12 cm down) below a wind slab on some decomposing new snow. On our way down we unintentionally triggered a small wind slab on a steep roll at 1,400' on a west facing slope. No one was caught and the avalanche ran a short distance because it ran into some alders, but if the alders hadn't been there it probably would have run further. The pockets of wind slab were small and patchy at this elevation due to much of the surface being blown down to ice. In the upper elevations the wind slab is much more connected and a larger avalanche could be triggered. 

There was active wind loading above 1,000'. Just above treeline we jumped on several test slopes that didn't move or crack. Then as we descended in some terrain that had several benches separated by short steep slopes a member of my group triggered a wind slab on a slope that was about 40 degrees where it was triggered.

Weather

It was cold and windy today from the north and temperatures were in the low teens F. Skies were mostly clear. Snow was being transported towards the south even at low elevations anywhere exposed to the wind.

A member of my group triggered this avalanche as they rode a steep wind loaded roll at 1,400' on a west facing slope. They were making a turn and rode off of the slab before it broke apart and ran a short distance into some alders below.
