Quick report

Quick observations south towards Mt Elly today and south of coal creek yesterday (2/12). The goal was to track the 2/6 weak layer (near surface facets) and get a better idea of where it is reactive and where it is not. Unfortunately the spatial distribution of the reactivity on this weak layer varies. Simply put, some slopes are reactive, some aren't. Slopes where the weak layer is reactive are capable of producing large propagation. North and east aspects in the middle and upper elevations remain the most suspect.  Any other patterns in the weak layer are difficult to identify as of now, both sheltered and wind loaded slopes have produced avalanches and unstable test results. 

This persistent weak layer will be worth tracking as we increase loading and stress with the incoming storm. Larger slab depth will also increase the consequences. 

Snowpack

Dug three snowpits to investigate the 2/6 weak layer of small near surface facets (less than 0.5mm) buried 25-40cm (10-16")  below the surface. Only one of the three snowpits produced propagation on the 2/6 layer:

Do Its 8500' N aspect (sheltered) ECTN12 down 27cm on

Do Its 8500' NE aspect (slightly wind loaded) ECTN12 down 32cm

Thanksgiving Bowl 9100' NNE aspect ECTP14 down 40cm
