AST 1 course obs today. A great day to observe the affects of wind - dismal ski quality. Mod- strong SW winds redistributing 5-7cm of storm snow . Temps steady -2 at 1500m treeline. We observed one new windslab size 2 from a distance during a break in the poor vis, lee E aspect below the large cornice above crater lake. No surprise given the extent of wind transport . The early season deep persistent slab is still alive and well- we had several whumpfs skiing through treeline areas. In a quick snow profile in s sheltered treeline glade , S Asp, 20 deg 1550m height of snow 150cm. Bottom 60cm heavily faceted and depth hoar large grains, Giving hard, but sudden collapse results.
Upper treeline and Alpine a mixture of every wind effected surface possible , including old hard slabs.
