snowpack

Coordinates

Quick Observation

based on observations from pit, we decided not to ski. multiple reactive layers observed in the snowpack. no cracking or whumps. steady snow throughout the day. strong to moderate winds from south to north. anticipating wind slabs on northern aspects.

Weather

relatively mild weather. freezing level approx 1000m. steady snow throughout the day. light to moderate winds throughout the day, blowing from the south to the north. broken clouds throughout the day (high and low)

Snowpack

dug a pit to the ground on a 38 degree slope in a cut block (below treeline). observed several layers in the snowpack: facet layer on the ground (base). two hard crust layers 100cm and 105cm down (suspect rain crusts). storm slab layer approx 55cm from surface. compression test results: storm slab (55cm) was reactive at 4 full-arm swings. crust layer (100cm) was reactive at 6 full-arm swings. facet layer (base) was not reactive but fell apart when dug into with a shovel. performed two ski cuts approx 1m above the pit. snow was not reactive on the first pass. second pass was closer to the pit and was reactive after several hard stomps. layer broke at 55cm.
