Skied one lap through mellow slopes and open trees off Cornice Ridge (East) then another lap down through Buzz’s Ridge South East. Can feel the crust under storm snow up to about 2000m. We dug down a bit to see the layers in the snowpack before we dropped into Buzz’s SE. Results below:
Location: Southeast aspect
Elevation: 2000 m
Snowpack Summary:
HS 125cm
- Observed 20 cm of recent storm snow sitting on a ~1 cm crust.
- 40cm down there is another thin crust with a thin faceted layer present underneath this crust.
- Deeper in the profile (60cm down), there is a thick rain crust (~5 cm)
Aimed to do an ECT but did not have my saw today and our rutschblock cord couldn’t cut through the crusts therefore info above is all we gathered.
Skiing overall was good, above 2000m was some great turns and below was fine as well as long as you were in fresh but could feel the firmness of the crust. Some sluffing in steeper pitches but did not observe any natural avalanches from the top of cornice or buzz’s. Cold temps today.
